Why Journaling Can Be Your Best Friend: The Top Benefits of Having a Journaling Practice

Journaling is like having a trusted friend who patiently listens to your thoughts, feelings, and reflections without judgment. It's a sacred space where you can pour out your heart and soul, and in return, it offers you clarity, insight, and solace.

Now, I haven’t always been a journaler. In fact, I still don’t journal every day, which is I think what turned me off from journaling in the first place.

A long time ago, someone tried to teach me that in order for journaling to be beneficial, you had to do it every day.

While that may have been true for her, it wasn’t true for me. And it doesn’t have to be true for you either!

I say, journal when you want to. Journal when you need to. Journal when it FEELS right for you.

Now you may be thinking, “but I don’t even know when or why I need to be journaling.” I used to be the same way! What is it even for? Why do you need it?

In this blog post we’ll discuss why journaling can be your best friend & the benefits that come along with putting pen to paper.

Here are some reasons why journaling can be your best friend on your spiritual journey:

Self-Reflection and Awareness

Journaling allows you to get in touch with your intuition. It invites you to explore your inner world. When you put your thoughts and emotions on paper, you gain a deeper understanding of yourself. It allows you to track your spiritual growth, celebrate your achievements, and work through challenges. When you open yourself up to write whatever needs to come out, you can access a deep place of inner wisdom & innate knowing. You can also allow yourself to process whatever is going on in your life. Processing your feelings is really important and it’s something that isn’t really taught in school. If you don’t know how to journal to process then check out some of the other posts or my shop.

Release and Let Go

Writing in a journal can be a therapeutic release. You may not realize it, but chances are, you’re carrying around a lot in your mind & body that needs to be released. Journaling can allow you to start letting go of everything you consciously and subconsciously carry around. You can express your fears, doubts, and worries, and allow them to flow from your mind onto the pages. This process frees up mental space and enables you to move forward with a lighter mind, body & spirit.

Manifestation and Intention Setting

Your journal is a powerful tool for manifesting your desires and setting clear intentions. By writing down your goals and aspirations, you are actively aligning your energy with your intentions, making them more likely to become a reality. What you focus on grows. If you’re focused on your goals or what you want for the future, the Universe will conspire to help make your dreams a reality. Where attention goes, energy flows. Gratitude and Positivity

This is one of my favorite types of journaling. When you write down things you are grateful for, you can shift your perspective to view life in a more positive light. Regularly noting down things you are grateful for can create an atmosphere of abundance and contentment, and when you live from an abundant mindset the Universe continues to provide in abundant ways. Everything is energy, and what we put out comes back to us. What you focus on grows, so focusing on the positive things you have going on in your life helps shift your mindset and bring more positive things in.

Spiritual Insights

During moments of meditation or deep contemplation, profound spiritual insights can arise. Journaling allows you to capture these moments of clarity and wisdom, preserving them for future reflection and growth. This is what I mean when I talk about accessing your inner wisdom, your intuition and your higher power. When you journal from a nonjudgemental space and place of curiosity you allow yourself to access a part of yourself that you may not be in touch with day in and day out. When people say they just had an intuitive thought or “felt” like there was something there, that’s your intuition. It’s always there and is always trying to help us, but sometimes we need a quiet space to access it.

Track Your Journey

Looking back through your journal can be a rewarding experience. It allows you to see how far you've come on your spiritual path, reminding you of your growth, lessons learned, and the wisdom you've acquired along the way. I always recommend writing the date at the top of each entry just for this reason! It’s really cool to look back and see how far we’ve come in our self-evolution. It’s also interesting to see if any patterns start to emerge. Is there someone or something that takes up the majority of your journaling time? Does the same issue keep coming up? How can you resolve it? Things like that are interesting to take note of so you can work on them in the future (or the present if you have the space to do so).

Creativity and Inspiration

Journaling isn't limited to words alone. You can sketch, doodle, or include images that inspire you. This creative aspect of journaling can lead to new insights and a deeper connection to your inner self. I personally love to include creating an image or adding a movement to my journaling process. This is what expressive arts is all about. It helps you truly anchor the words into the body, mind & spirit.

I hope these things have helped inspire you to start your journaling journey if you haven’t already!

Like I said, it’s not something that may come easy to you, or that you have to do every day, but doing some sort of journaling on a regular basis can help in many different aspects of your life.
